What got you started reading fantasy?

Gail Carriger would like to know!

For funsies, here's my answer.  My first foray into adult SFF came in two parts. I was often sick as a kid, and my mom used to read to me from I, Robot when I was laid up. That would have been when I was 8. The same year (during a healthy streak), I picked up a copy of Piers Anthony's Ogre, Ogre my dad had left lying around. I didn't understand the sexual politics (thank heavens; when I reread the Xanth novels as an adult, I was pretty horrified) but loved the word-play. That's where it all began for me.
