The Weeks that Were
Sunday, May 22, 2011
A couple weeks since the last recap, but here's a quick look at what we've been doing.
The book reviews...
- Ben Aaronovitch's Moon over Soho (2011) (and the lack of detection in epic fantasy)
- Maxwell Drake's Farmers and Mercenaries (2010) (and the role of engagement)
- Matt Forbeck's Vegas Knights (2011) (and the taste of blockbuster icing)
- China Miéville's Embassytown (2011) (and the autonomy of the mind)
- Captain Frank Shaw's Outlaws of the Air (1927) (and the lost punk of steampunk)
- George Simenon's Sunday (1960) (and the art of composition)
- Lavie Tidhar's HebrewPunk (2007) (and the catchiness of alternate history)
- Four noir novels from Hard Case Crime - Day Keene's Home is the Sailor, Donald Westlake's 361, John Lange's Zero Cool and David Schow's Gun Work
Outside of the printed word, we also looked at...
- Monsters and Mullets took at look at The Princess Bride (and why it is so ridiculously good)
- Runebound (2005) (and the role of women in fantasy board games)
A few other scritchings and scratchings:
- The Embassytown event at Foyles (and eating at the kid's table)
- The first issue of Weaponizer Quarterly saw print (and e-print) including a short non-story by Jared
- Some well-intended fan art for Savage City
- Eleven lovely libraries in fantasy and science fiction
Away from the internet, the past few weeks saw us not only at the Foyles event but also at the launch of the amazing new exhibition at the British Library. We'll be returning repeatedly over coming months.
